Officials at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City say several insurance plans on the federal health care marketplace exclude the pediatric hospital from their networks.
Hospital administrators told the Kansas City Business Journal consumers generally are choosing lower-priced, limited-option plans, and they’re now often shopping insurance without oversight from an employer or human resources professional. As a result, they may have to pay more out of pocket for services under the Affordable Care Act.
Children’s Mercy officials are asking insurance providers to be more transparent in their paperwork about their networks.
"In order to get to the point of making a determination of whether a Children's Mercy provider is in or out of a network, it varies, but it's anywhere from 8-12 clicks to get there," a Mercy payer relations director told the business journal. "It's a really confusing process to say the least.”
