Soda sales fall 3% in 2013

Posted online
On the backs of a skyrocketing obesity rate and increasing studies into what we eat, Americans put their foot down in 2013 when it came to soda. Beverage manufactures report the lowest sales volume levels since 1995.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports U.S. sales volume of carbonated soft drinks fell 3 percent in 2013, extending a streak of declines that began nearly a decade ago. It also represents a steeper drop than the 1.2 percent decline in 2012 and the 1 percent drop in 2011, according to an annual report by Beverage Digest, an industry tracker.

Even diet soda sales are down, with popular brand Diet Coke dropping 6.8 percent.

According to the report, here are the top 10 soda brands and how their sales volume performed:
  • Coke: down 0.5 percent
  • Diet Coke: down 6.8 percent
  • Pepsi: down 3.6 percent
  • Mountain Dew: down 2.2 percent
  • Dr Pepper: down 0.2 percent
  • Sprite: up 0.1 percent
  • Diet Pepsi: down 6.9 percent
  • Diet Mountain Dew: down 3.1 percent
  • Fanta: down 4 percent
  • Coke Zero: down 0.1 percent
