SMSU completes phase I of student union project

Posted online

The first phase of the renovation of the Robert W. Plaster Student Union on the campus of Southwest Missouri State University opened Jan. 11.

Slated for completion in 2000, the renovation will cost $12.1 million.

Three food vendors Blimpie Subs & Salads, Domino's Pizza and Wok & Roll Chinese restaurants are operating in the food court of the renovated student union, which opened in time for the beginning of the university's spring semester.

The food court, which includes a designated, enclosed smoking area, seats 350, according to John Taylor, assistant dean of students and director of the student union. The food court is on the north end of the building.

"I think the student body will be excited about the convenience and variety of options now available to them," said Angie Funaiole, an SMSU senior and vice chairwoman of the Plaster Student Union Board.

Grand opening activities were planned throughout the first week of classes. Among the events were a reception with the SMSU Board of Governors, musical performances and prizes from vendors during the week of Jan. 11-20.

"Our plans include a convenience and music store, video rental, dry cleaners, travel agency, bank, catalog clothing store and a seasonal/hobby store," Taylor said. The addition of two food vendors and seven retail vendors to the second floor of the student union will be in place for the 1999 fall semester.

By then the second phase of the student union's renovation will also be complete. The second phase includes a bowling alley, billiards tables, craft and workshop areas, and ballroom and conference rooms.

By January 2000, a 500-seat theater and box office will open. The box office will provide tickets for campus sporting and entertainment events.
