The Smithsonian Institution is proposing permanent security checkpoints at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.
Its proposal before the National Capital Planning Commission asks for supplemental perimeter fencing to close gaps and reduce the number of pedestrian entrances to three from 13. A fourth entrance would be added at a planned $50 million parking garage.
The National Zoo currently is the only Smithsonian public venue without security screening. It has 25,000 daily visitors.
