Small Business of the Year finalists named

An architecture and interior design firm, a pharmacy and a supermarket are the finalists for the 2007 W. Curtis Strube Small Business of the Year Award.

The award is presented by the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business Council and is determined by an independent panel of judges. The honoree will be announced May 9 during Small Business Week.

The finalists are:

• Buxton-Kubik-Dodd Inc., 1531 E. Bradford Parkway, specializing in architecture and interior design. The firm was founded about 23 years ago and has 10 employees. Brian Kubik is president.

• The 220 W. Plainview Road location of Family Pharmacy, specializing in pharmaceuticals and home and hospital equipment. The store was founded in 1977 and is led by President and CEO Lynn Morris.

• Smillie’s Market Inc., dba Smillie’s IGA, a supermarket at 1421 S. Glenstone Ave. President Bill Smillie has owned the store since taking over the former Consumers Market in 1992. There are 21 employees.

The Small Business of the Year Award has been given since 1992. The 2006 honoree was Amberg Entertainment.
