Small-business confidence dips in September

Small-business owners' confidence about their economic situation declined in September, according to a report released today by the National Federation of Independent Business.

Citing declines in job openings, inventory satisfaction and plans for inventory investment, the NFIB reported its small-business optimism index dropped to 94.1 last month from 94.4 in August.

Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal predicted the index would climb to 95.
