Eligible cancer patients will have an easier time finding accommodations when traveling for treatment as a result of a recent donation by Sleep Inn, 233 E. Camino Alto. American Cancer Society Heartland Division officials visited Springfield March 8 to present an award to Sleep Inn, which in 2004 donated 174 rooms, worth more than $10,000, to the American Cancer Society through its Guestroom Housing Program. According to an American Cancer Society news release, the Guestroom Housing Program is a cooperative effort between the American Cancer Society and local hotels. Participating hotels donate room on a space-available basis to patients referred by the American Cancer Society. Overnight accommodations are provided to patients at no cost. “The American Cancer Society could not operate without valuable contributions like this,” said Nikki Leake, health initiatives specialist for the American Cancer Society, in the release. “We depend upon volunteers and donations to carry our patient support programs into the community. The response of Sleep Inn’s management has been heartwarming.” A treating physician or social worker must refer eligible patients. Patients must live more than 50 miles from the center where treatment is being sought and must be unable to afford housing.
