Sinquefield money flows in fallout over tax cut fight

Posted online
Siding with Gov. Jay Nixon in last year's tax cut proposal veto session has incurred the wrath of Rex Sinquefield for the so-called "flimsy 15" — including one representative from southwest Missouri.

Rep. Jeff Messenger, R-Republic, is among three other GOP targets the St. Louis mega-political donor aims to defeat this election season. The 15 Republicans helped thwart the 2013 tax cut by siding with congressional Democrats, who said the bill was flawed.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports, four of the 15 GOP renegades drew primary challengers in the Aug. 5 election. Those four incumbents are now seeing their opponents pick up fat checks from the Club for Growth's political action committee.

Sinquefield is an avid supporter of eliminating all income tax in the Show-Me State. He funds the "pro-business" lobbying group Club for Growth, whose Missouri chapter took in $973,000 in March and another $100,000 four days later.

The Post-Dispatch reports Messenger's opposing candidate in the 130th District, Loren Hunt, received a $25,000 campaign donation from the club.
