Showrooming left in the dust as more shoppers go online

Posted online
Showrooming, or visiting a store to test a product before going online to purchase it for a cheaper price, saw a drop in popularity in 2013, according to CNBC.

IBM released a study Monday at the National Retail Federation convention showing spending attributed to showrooming amounted to 30 percent of purchases made online, compared to 50 percent in 2012.

In-store retail sales in general rose 2.7 percent this holiday, reports analytics firm ShopperTrak. The rise is attributed to shoppers going online to research products before coming in to brick-and-mortar locations to make the purchase.

IBM also reports mobile sales rose 46 percent in the fourth quarter, prompting retailers to optimize their mobile sites.

The survey also found that price consistency across shopping channels and the ability to ship out-of-stock items directly to the homes of customers are the two most important things shoppers consider when making in-store and online purchases.
