Should people without kids pay higher taxes?

No one is denying that being a parent is a difficult, expensive endeavor. Nor is there any argument that society as a whole benefits from parents rearing the next generation of workers and caregivers.
 
The Internal Revenue Service understands how expensive it is to raise kids, and provides tax breaks to parents to the tune of about $170 billion a year, according to reporting by CNNMoney.
 
But should those tax breaks be offset by taxing childless people at higher rates? CNNMoney looks at the controversial proposal put forth by Slate by examining both sides of the argument.
