Sepp Blatter elected to fifth term as FIFA president

Posted online
FIFA President Sepp Blatter was elected to a fifth term Friday, two days after criminal charges and arrests were leveled against other top officials of world soccer’s ruling body.

Separate investigations of the organization by the U.S. and Switzerland are ongoing. American prosecutors charged nine FIFA officials with corruption following their arrest by Swiss police at a hotel in Zurich. Swiss authorities are examining possible wrongdoing in the award of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments to Russia and Qatar, respectively.

Blatter’s only opponent in the election, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, withdrew before a second-round vote, according to Bloomberg Business. Blatter was ahead of Ali 133 votes to 73 after the first round.

The 79-year-old president indicated the new four-year term would be his last as head of the nonprofit group, which made close to $5 billion from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
