Senate heads for gun control showdown likely to go nowhere

The U.S. Senate is scheduled to vote today on four gun control proposals that are likely to fail, The Washington Post reports.

In the wake of the Orlando, Fla., shooting massacre, Democrats and Republicans will each present two proposals designed to prevent suspected terrorists from buying guns. They also would tighten background checks for all gun buyers.

Variations of the proposals failed to pass the Senate in December, when the body last debated gun control measures in the wake of the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif.
