Seminars focus on wage garnishment issues

When wage garnishments are put in place, an employer must withhold the earnings of an individual for the payment of debt as the result of a court order or similar procedure.

“It’s overwhelming to consider all that is involved in a wage garnishment for the payroll department,” said Gary Marble, president of AIM, in a news release. “As more and more agencies begin using wage garnishments as a way of recovering money from an individual, payroll departments must deal with issues regarding appropriate amounts withheld and to whom they should be paid.”

The seminars will be held:

• Feb. 28 – Associated Industries of Missouri Building, Jefferson City

• March 7 – Sheraton Hotel Clayton Plaza, Clayton

• March 14 – Hawthorn Park Hotel, 2431 N. Glenstone Ave., Springfield

• March 21 – Hilton Garden Inn, Independence

Seminars will cover Missouri statutes regarding payroll deductions, garnishments, child support claims against wages, frequency of pay, rules regarding voluntary wage assignments, what can and cannot be deducted from an employee’s paycheck, and rules regarding final paychecks.
