SeaWorld killer whale dies

Posted online
The 4,600-pound killer whale Unna died Dec. 21 after a monthslong illness at the SeaWorld park in San Antonio. She was 18.

CNN reports she suffered from a resistant strain of a fungus called Candida and a necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of her death.

The death is another point in a long string of bad public relations for the aquatic park. SeaWorld's reputation was damaged in part by “Blackfish,” a 2013 documentary co-produced by CNNFilms. The film shows the practice of capturing orca babies in the 1970s and casts SeaWorld in a harsh light for raising the whales in dark and cramped conditions. It also blames SeaWorld for causing one killer whale, Tilikum, to become psychotic, killing three people, including a trainer.

CNN reports SeaWorld canceled all killer whale shows at the San Antonio park for the day.
