Seattle to become latest US city to tax sugary drinks

Seattle's City Council voted yesterday to impose a tax on sodas and other sugary beverages sold to consumers.

The city will joins others who have passed similar legislation, including Philadelphia, San Francisco, its Bay-area neighbors of Berkeley, Oakland and Albany, California, Boulder, Colorado, and Cook County, Illinois, which includes Chicago.

The Seattle measure is slated to go into effect in January.
