Seattle council approves business tax despite Amazon’s opposition

Seattle City Council yesterday approved a so-called head tax on the metropolitan area's largest employers to fund efforts to battle homelessness.

With the 8-1 vote, companies that make $20 million or more in annual sales will pay 14 cents per employee hour, or $275 per employee annually.

Amazon recently said it halted production of a new 17-story office tower pending council's decision.

“While we have resumed construction planning for Block 18, we remain very apprehensive about the future created by the council’s hostile approach and rhetoric toward larger businesses, which forces us to question our growth here,” Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener said.
