Scripps Howard News Service to close after 96 years

Posted online

A newspaper industry staple since World War I is shutting its doors. E.W. Scripps Co.'s Scripps Howard News Service, which fed syndicated stories to papers across the U.S., will be end by the new year.

According to a Bloomberg report, McClatchy-Tribune Information Services, a joint venture of McClatchy Co. (NYSE: MIN) and Tribune Co., will take over Scripps Howard’s clients.

As part of the changes, Cincinnati-based Scripps – owner of 13 daily newspapers and 19 TV stations – is restructuring its Washington newsroom to better serve online and television audiences. Seven jobs will be cut from the wire service bureau, but 10 jobs will be created to push investigative journalism and political coverage.

According to the Bloomberg report, Scripps, founded in 1917, supplied newspaper clients with Washington coverage and news from around the world, as well as photos, commentary and editorial cartoons.
