Scholastic pulls George Washington book after slavery backlash

Posted online
Scholastic announced it would no longer distribute "A Birthday Cake for George Washington" because the picture book doesn't include enough historical context regarding slavery.

The text, written by Ramin Ganeshram and illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton, is about Washington's servants preparing for his birthday celebration, according to a description on Amazon.

According to the description, his slave, Hercules, "takes great pride in baking the president's cake."

On Sunday, Scholastic officials said the book doesn't meet its standards for presenting information to younger children.
