Supermarket chain Schnucks is laying off 190 union warehouse workers in Bridgeton.
Mike Goebel, secretary and treasurer of Teamsters Local 688, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the workers who receive benefits and are paid between $14 and $22 an hour would be replaced by third-party workers who earn $10-$11 an hour without benefits.
A 915,000-square-foot distribution center opening in July would be operated by a third-party logistics company.
“We have outgrown our Bridgeton warehouses; they are very old, and as a result, inefficient by today’s standards,” Schnucks officials said in a statement. “The new facility offers an efficient layout that nearly doubles the space we currently have. It also increases service capabilities because of its improved design.”
