Missouri Attorney Eric Schmitt renewed his threat to sue the city of St. Louis after its top fiscal body endorsed spending $1 million in federal funds to help women get abortions.
The vote by the Board of Estimate and Apportionment now heads to the Board of Aldermen, which gave preliminary approval last week. Using American Rescue Plan Act money, the spending initiative would help St. Louis women get abortions in Illinois and other states through transportation, child care and other logistical assistance.
Missouri's trigger ban on nearly all abortions went into effect after the recent reversal of the Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court.
