New Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt on Monday filed an amicus brief opposing debtors' prisons.
In one of his first actions as attorney general, Schmitt argued against the collection of board bills, when inmates are charged for the cost of their incarceration.
The charges referred to as "court costs" can add jail time for failure to pay. Schmitt wants to end that practice.
