Springfield Contractors Association celebrated its 50th anniversary in March. SCA is a regional construction organization that was founded in March 1953 by 22 original general contracting members. These members bonded together for the general purpose of allowing an association to negotiate with local crafts regarding wages and employee benefits.|ret||ret||tab|

During the first general meeting, the 22 members agreed to annual dues of $1 each and their first month's expenditures of $1.56. Now 50 years later, more than 400 members pay annual dues of $250 each and the association operates on an annual budget of more than $220,000.|ret||ret||tab|

In 50 years, there have been many changes, but some things have remained the same. In April 1963, the association voted to set aside the first Tuesday of each month for general meetings. During the past 40 years, only one time has it failed to conduct its regular monthly meeting. The original membership, made up of only general contractors, realized within four months the need to allow subcontractors to be a part of the growing organization in order to meet its goals and prosper. In November 1973, the association took another giant step by allowing associate members to join. These associate members include attorneys, car dealers, public entities, newspapers, Web site designers, chiropractors, private investigators and cellular phone providers.|ret||ret||tab|

While the original association was formed to help negotiate wages and benefits, the current mission of Springfield Contractors Association is to further the interests of the local construction industry while providing a safe work environment for employees and the general public. SCA strives to cultivate working relationships with local government agencies, community leaders, architects and engineers. Fulfillment of this mission is pivotal to the development of the Springfield community.|ret||ret||tab|

To help fulfill its mission the association has liaison committees that work with the city of Springfield, City Utilities, Greene County, Southwest Missouri State University, Ozarks Technical Community College, Springfield Public Schools and the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects. These committees work hand-in-hand with these parties and our members to solve problems and make policies that will benefit our industry in the community. The association also sponsors many social activities, including golf tournaments and the always-popular July pig roast.|ret||ret||tab|

SCA looks toward the future with a diverse and energetic board of directors, a dedicated staff and a solid group of volunteers who are willing to get involved to produce solutions to the problems that face the construction industry.|ret||ret||tab|

Springfield Contractors Association is an integral part of Salute to Construction, and SCA sees it as an opportunity to recognize those people who distinguish themselves and the construction industry as a whole with high professional standards and quality craftsmanship.|ret||ret||tab|
