I voted for the proposal that includes the Woodruff and McDaniel buildings because of that component, but I don’t like the banquet facility on the first floor.
What I really think should be done with the Heer’s building is for the developer to lease it to a high-end department store, such as Saks or Neiman Marcus, renovate the building for that purpose, which is how it was designed in the first place. The square footage in the Heer’s building is just about right for a high-end department store here, and I believe the Springfield market can support it. I also believe that if it were announced that a high-end store … was going into Heer’s, other boutique retailers would flock to downtown. … We just need a developer that can convince a retailer like Saks to come to town.
