While the economy may be slowing, area architects and engineers are as busy as ever. Detailed in the pages of this section are some of area design professionals' newest and most significant projects. The projects appear in alphabetical order by the name of the design firm.
Republic R-III Athletic Facility
Jack Ball & Associates Architects PC
Located at 688 E. Hines in Republic, this new athletic facility for the Republic R-III School Board and Superintendent Howard Neeley has a value of $1.57 million and was completed in fall 2000.
J. Christopher Ball was the project architect on the project and Crawford Construction Company of Marshfield was the contractor.
This project converted approximately 4.5 acres into a new football stadium with press box and seating for 2,000-plus, an all-weather track, two football practice fields, a future baseball stadium and a locker room/concessions/restroom building.
The football/track stadium includes lights that lower to ground level for maintenance and upkeep. The building includes home and away locker rooms, a weight/film room, offices and training rooms, concessions, public restrooms, storage and ticket booths.
Kelly Plantation
Decades Theatre
Bates & Associates
This project, located in Destin, Fla., is a 32,000-square-foot live performance theater seating 1,500. Alan Bates is the architect on the project, which has an estimated value of $4 million. The land for the Kelly Plantation Decades Theatre, located on the coast of Florida, was donated by the Kelly family in order to promote the arts.
The theater, which is now in the preliminary design phase, will provide space for live drama and musical performances. Phase I of the project also will include retail and residential development.
Greyhaven Cottage
Briggs Architecture + Design
This "old European" style cottage home, designed by architect Don Briggs, AIA, reflects the interests and travels of the owners.
The features in the home reinforce the memories from their visits to Europe, Israel and Africa. The house comprises 4,200 square feet on three levels, and it is located in eastern Greene County on five acres of Ozarks forest land, situated near a bluff with a seasonal stream. The value of the project is approximately $500,000 and the builder is Michael D. Smith, of Michael Dee Smith Homes.
The Keeter Center
Butler, Rosenbury & Partners Inc.
The Keeter Center for Character Education is owned by College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout. Bruce Adib-Yazdi is the architect for the 77,000-square-foot lodge building, which includes 14 guest rooms, a great room, dining room and a 30,500-square-foot auditorium. College of the Ozarks Construction is the contractor on the project and the value is not available.
The Keeter Center is a multipurpose facility that will include a lodge space with historic artifacts and features about the college, a new dining facility to upgrade the existing Friendship House, guest lodging and a 300-person auditorium for student orientation and other speaking engagements.
The project is themed in the context of a campus building that burned down in the 20s but originally was built in St. Louis for the 1904 World's Fair, then disassembled and moved to College of the Ozarks.
Colonel Days Conversion
The Design Agency
Daniel E. Scott, AIA, is the project architect for the conversion of the former Colonel Days building at Battlefield and Glenstone. Owned by Kimco Realty in Dayton, Ohio, this 3,000-square-foot project is valued at $200,000. The contractor on the job is Dooley & Mack of Franklin, Tenn.
Although the original structure has been stripped down to the foundations and structural framing, this project is technically considered a remodel. The existing roof structure is being raised approximately three feet and a new exterior envelope and new interior finishes are being constructed.
The entrance will be relocated to the west side of the structure to alleviate traffic in front of Barnes & Noble. A software retailer is planning to occupy half of the building and a cellular retailer will occupy the other half.
Disney Elementary Expansion
ESC Inc. Engineers and Architects
This project, located at 4100 S. Fremont Ave., comprises the expansion of the existing kitchen and all-purpose room at Disney Elementary School. John David Limp is the project architect on the $400,000 expansion, which encompasses a 2,988-square-foot remodel and 2,947-square-foot addition. The project will be let for bid in spring 2001.
Construction on the project consists of painted concrete masonry units on the interior and brick veneer on the exterior, vinyl composition flooring and acoustical tile ceilings, as well as fixtures, furnishings and kitchen equipment.
Phelps County Hospital Addition
Esterly, Schneider & Associates Inc., AIA
Craig A. Schneider, AIA, is the architect on this 70,000-square-foot, three-story addition to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. J. S. Alberici Construction Company Inc. is the construction manager, and the project is valued at $11 million. The project is slated to be bid in early April with construction to begin immediately thereafter.
On the first floor, the new addition will provide space to expand several of the hospital's departments, including radiation/oncology, rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation and laboratory. The rehabilitation and cardiac rehabilitation departments will each have individual gyms, as well as new treatment and staff areas. The new state-of-the-art laboratory will include increased space for microbiology and histology.
The second floor is designed for shell space to accommodate future expansion needs. The new construction will accent the original tan, masonry brick facade with lighter masonry units around the windows and at the building towers. A new exposed-structure entry complements the expansive glass atrium and revolving doors.
Faith Assembly of God Church
Godwin & Associates Design Consultants
Located at 3001 W. Division Street, this addition to Faith Assembly of God Church comprises 9,712 square feet and has a seating capacity of approximately 400. Godwin & Associates is the architect on the approximately $1 million project, and Don Russell Builders of Branson is the contractor.
The church was seeking an addition that would primarily increase its seating capacity, as well as provide both a contemporary and visually pleasing appearance. Subsequently, this addition was designed to include a new worship area, administration area and child-care facilities.
Rich Hill High School
Hood-Rich Inc.
This new high school for the Rich Hill R-IV School District is located at 110 W. Olive in Rich Hill. Jack Hood is the architect on the project and Jana Funk is the project architect on the 33,582-square-foot building. The project encompasses 17 classrooms, an auditorium, cafeteria, library and office area and is valued at $2.2 million. It will be let for bid in February.
The new high school will replace Rich Hill's current high school building. The project will serve both the school district and the community by providing an auditorium for performing arts.
Ozarks Family Resource Center
JPS & Associates
This project, for Boys & Girls Town of Missouri, is located at 1212 W. Lombard St. JPS & Associates Inc. is the architect on the project, which comprises 11,000 square feet of housing space for 16 beds, as well as a nursery, day care, playground, and rooms for family therapy.
With a value of $1.5 million, the project is being built by Plaster and Associates.
The Ozarks Family Resource Center is an emergency care facility to temporarily house children and provide out-of-home shelter until they can return to their own home, a foster home or be placed in residential treatment.
New Library for Howell Valley
Lohmeyer-Russell PC
Located in West Plains, this project for the Howell Valley R-I School District comprises 5,244-square-feet on one story. Larry Parke, AIA, is the architect on the project, which is valued at $316,000. Peterson Construction Company of Mountain Grove is the contractor.
This new library facility is the first phase of an overall master plan which will eventually include additional classrooms, a physical education facility, etc. The new library structure also includes a new computer room, science classroom and teacher workroom.
Stages St. Louis
Pellham Phillips Hagerman Architects-Engineers
This 54,000-square-foot project, located at 104 N. Clay in St. Louis, is a 1,100-seat American Play Theater seating 850 on the main floor and 250 on the second level. Chuck Foster is the project architect on the $15 million project, which is designed to be more than a place to see a show it will be a gathering space before and after performances. No bid date has been set for the project.
The Musical Theater Academy will provide education spaces for dance, vocal studies and acting. Support spaces include a catering kitchen, scene shop, paint shop, prop shop, electrical shop, costume shop, dressing rooms, wardrobe room, musician room, crew room and rehearsal halls. The entire development will provide retail, restaurant and office space.
McCauley Park
Sapp Design Associates - Architect
Located in Nixa, this city of Nixa/Nixa Parks Department project comprises a community center and aquatics park. It has an estimated value of $4.9 million $2.4 million for building construction, $1.5 million for the aquatics park and $1 million for park development.
Sapp Design Associates is the architect on the project, which comprises 35,800 square feet.
Also contributing are Larkin Aquatics as pool consultant; Smith-Goth Engineers as mechanical engineer; Allstate Consultants as structural engineer; and Shaffer & Hines Inc. as civil engineer. At press time, the city of Nixa was scheduled to receive bids from general contractors Jan. 11.
McCauley Park is a 37-acre city park that will provide a variety of quality community and recreational experiences for the entire community. The park will consist of a community building, aquatics park, walking trails, restroom and picnic pavilions, children's playground and athletic fields.
Nixa Community Center will provide community spaces, recreation spaces, parks department offices and, with the partnership of St. John's Regional Health Center, a fitness and cardiovascular center.
The Aquatics Park comprises 11,000 square feet of water space with slides, play and water features, swimming lanes, diving boards, shade structures and a full-service concessions area.
New Boys & Girls Club
Slone Architects Inc.
This new facility for Boys & Girls Club of Springfield will be located at Division Street and Fremont Avenue. Slone Architects Inc. is the architect for the 39,473-square-foot facility which includes such functions as a technology center, learning center, teen center, multiple activity rooms with games area, administrative and support staff offices, as well as a high-school-regulation size basketball court and full-size indoor pool.
Morelock-Ross Builders Inc. is the contractor for the facility, which is valued at $3.7 million.
The new, state-of-the-art Boys & Girls Club facility will provide after-school recreation, tutoring, juvenile intervention and life skills training. It is now in the design stage of development.
Panera Bread
Warren & Goodin
This new store for Panera Bread, also known as St. Louis Bread Co., is located in the Parklane Retail Center in Dallas. Owned by the Dallas-Fort Worth Bread Co. LP, the architect on the 5,000-square-foot project is Warren & Goodin. Hamilton Contracting is the contractor on the project, which is valued at $500,000.
This is one of several Panera Bread stores in Texas and Oklahoma currently in design or construction phase. Panera Bread, known locally as St. Louis Bread Co., is a national bakery and sandwich/pastry restaurant. The typical location is 5,000 square feet with interior and patio seating for 150-plus.
Bolivar R-I Auditorium, Additions
Sam A. Winn & Associates Architects
This project for the Bolivar R-I School District comprises a 20,200-square-foot auditorium addition, 15,000 square feet of classroom and career additions and renovation of existing facilities. Gary Barbee and Wade Lininger are the architects on the project, which is valued at $3.25 million. J.J. Jackson Construction Company Inc. of Marshfield is the contractor.
As a second-phase addition to the high school, constructed in 1995, also designed by Winn & Associates, this project comprises a performing arts auditorium with theater seating for 1,000, complete with stage curtains, stage lighting, sound system, video and 20-by-20-foot projection system; speech, drama and music classrooms; and lobby expansion. This facility will be utilized by the entire student body and the Bolivar community.
The high school will also receive a career center addition, vocational-agriculture classroom and distance-learning lab for holding classes via satellite. This project, which includes mechanical and interior renovation to the intermediate school and middle school, is now under construction and is scheduled for completion this summer.
