St. Louis-based Sara Lee Corporation Aug. 14 announced it has completed its acquisition of The Earthgrains Company, including the bakery at 1028 St. Louis St. in Springfield.
According to a news release from the Sara Lee Corp., temporary signage noting that the bakery is now part of Sara Lee Bakery Group Inc., the combined bakery operations of Sara Lee and Earthgrains, was erected Aug. 14.
The local bakery employs 120 people, and an additional 210 employees work in the bakery's sales and distribution system that serves the region.
The Springfield bakery will continue to bake Colonial, Grant's Farm and Iron Kids bread and buns, and Sara Lee will continue marketing breads, buns, bagels and snack cakes with the brand names Earth Grains and Break Cakes in Missouri.
Earthgrains' common stock ceased trading on the New York Stock Exchange at the close of business Aug. 14, the release said.
