Safety, environmental conference set for May

The Mid-America Safety, Health & Environmental Conference & Exposition will be held May 9-12 at Tan-Tar-A resort at Lake of the Ozarks. |ret||ret||tab|

The conference offers a broad range of programs for health and safety professionals, including some specifically geared to the construction industry. Certification points and continuing education units are available through Central Missouri State University, and special events at the conference include a golf tournament, fishing tournament and spouse activities.|ret||ret||tab|

Listed are some highlights of the programs available. Many other courses are offered, but those detailed are specific to the construction industry.|ret||ret||tab|

"10-Hour OSHA Construction," a two-day certificate course, is intended to provide instruction on construction safety and health topics to entry-level participants. Using the OSHA standards as a guide, special emphasis is placed on the most hazardous areas in construction. Topics covered include electrical safety, cranes, materials handling, fall protection, scaffolding, hazard communication, excavations, fire protection, stairways and ladders. The golf and fishing tournaments are held 2:30-6 p.m., and the Exposition Grand Opening and Reception takes place 6-8 p.m.|ret||ret||tab|

"Trenching & Shoring" is held 10-11:50 a.m. The course covers all aspects of Subpart P, including new definitions applicable to employers, as well as soil sampling, testing and analysis, shoring, sloping and benching.|ret||ret||tab|

The all-conference buffet luncheon is held 12-1:30 p.m., followed by "Environmental Site Evaluation (Due Diligence)" 1:30-3:20 p.m. Targeted to the potential property buyer/developer, this program covers the steps to take to protect against future environmental liabilities from site selection to purchase. Also covered will be issues associated with a phase I assessment and how in-depth an analysis should be to protect the buyer's interests.|ret||ret||tab|

"Scaffolding Safety," held 8-8:50 a.m., offers a fast-paced review of key elements of the scaffolding regulation, including working from erection, dismantling, fall protection and training. Familiarity with 29CFR1926 Subpart L is helpful.|ret||ret||tab|

"Do You Need a Permit to Let it Rain on Your Business? Storm Water Permitting," is held 9-9:50 a.m. and provides a review and update on stormwater permitting for business and new construction. This session will cover phase II permitting requirements and how to put together a permit application.|ret||ret||tab|
