Russian alcohol consumption down 43%

A World Health Organization report found Russian alcohol consumption dropped 43% from 2003 to 2016.

Under former President Dmitry Medvedev, Russia introduced alcohol-control measures, including advertising restrictions and increased taxes. A push toward healthy lifestyles also is being cited.

Average life expectancy in Russia is rising, according to the WHO. Last year, a historic peak was reached, at 68 years old for men and 78 years old for women.
