A March 24 ribbon cutting marked the completion of intersection improvements at Kearney Street and LeCompte Avenue. Hartman & Co. Inc. was the general contractor for the project, and Hood-Rich Architects and Engineers designed the improvements. A cooperative cost-sharing agreement among Springfield Under-ground, the Missouri Department of Transportation and the city of Springfield funded the $1.4 million project. The city’s portion comes from developer/grant matching funds for capital improvements through the eighth-cent transportation sales tax, according to a city of Springfield news release. Springfield Underground contributed more than $500,000 in private funding toward the project and right-of-way. City Utilities assisted with electrical upgrades. Improvements include new signals, sidewalks, a storm water management system, and street widening. As a result of the improvements, motorist safety is increased and delays along the corridor are reduced, the release said. The project also provides geometric improvements needed for the efficient movement of goods from businesses along LeCompte Avenue and in the Partnership Industrial Center. “This important infrastructure investment will encourage economic development and business expansion in northeast Springfield, while benefiting existing businesses,” said Marc Thornsberry, director of public works for the city of Springfield.
