Review: Futuristic Mac Pro has power to spare

Posted online
Apple’s new Mac Pro is going to seduce certain creative types who have traditionally preferred Macs for graphics, video, photos and music, according to a review published Thursday in the New York Times.

The desktop computer gets raves for its sleek, shiny, futuristic design that the reviewer says will complement an ultramodern workspace, as well as for its speed and power (high-end Mac Pros offer 64 gigabytes of memory and a 12-core Intel processor). The Mac Pro also offers the graphics and processor power for 4K video, although Apple doesn’t have a monitor capable of displaying 4K.

Downsides to the Mac Pro include its heft. Despite being promoted as a “portable desktop,” the reviewer found actually porting the computer to be cumbersome. And its hefty price will probably keep the Mac Pro out of the hands of most designers. A stripped model, sans monitor, keyboard and mouse, starts at $8,099. Shipping, however, is free.
