Retailers feel shoppers' Christmas cheer

High consumer confidence and a robust job market fueled higher U.S. retail sales during the holiday season, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse.

The Mastercard Inc. unit reported sales, excluding automobiles, increased 4.9 percent from Nov. 1 through Christmas Eve.

That's up from a 3.7 percent gain in the same period a year earlier.
