Restaurant owners seek new definition of 'full-time' ahead of ACA rollout

The pending rollout of the Affordable Care Act has restaurant owners lobbying Congress to nix the current definition of a full-time job as 30 hours or more per week, according to a Bloomberg report.
 
Currently, businesses which employ 50 or more workers who log 30 or more hours per week will be required to offer those employees health benefits by 2015. Restaurant owners claim this hits their industry harder than most, since 21 percent of restaurant workers put in 30 to 36 hours per week, compared with 8.9 percent of workers in other industries.
 
But some restaurants already provide workers with health care benefits, including Starbucks and the Cheesecake Factory. Others, including Krispy Kreme and Burger King franchisee Carrols Restaurant Group, say early predictions indicate costs associated with the mandate will be less than feared.
