State Rep. Alex Riley, R-Springfield, has been chosen by his Republican colleagues as the next speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives.
The Missouri House Republican Caucus voted today in Jefferson City to name Riley as speaker designee, through which he's scheduled to become speaker in 2027, according to a news release. The official speaker election is scheduled to take place when the Missouri General Assembly convenes in January 2027.
Riley, who will continue to serve as majority floor leader during the 2026 legislative session, announced in June that he would seek the speaker role.
“I am humbled by the trust my colleagues have placed in me to serve as speaker designee,” Riley said in the release. “House Republicans represent Missourians from every corner of the state, and together we will continue to advance policies that grow our economy, safeguard individual liberties and ensure Missouri remains a place where families can thrive."
Riley would be the second speaker of the Missouri House from Springfield. The first was Elijah Haahr, succeeded by Riley in the House’s 134th District seat.
An attorney with Healy Law Offices LLC in Springfield, Riley was first elected to the Missouri House in 2020. He was elected as majority floor leader in November 2024.
