Republicans learn lessons from Kansas' dramatic tax cuts

Posted online
Republicans lawmakers in Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin and beyond say they have learned a cautionary lesson from dramatic tax cuts Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback secured in the Sunflower State, according to Politico.

Kansas is facing a projected revenue gap of $279 million this year, and GOP leaders in other states are distancing themselves from Brownback as they work to implement more incremental tax cuts.

In 2012 and 2013, Kansas adopted a two-part tax package forwarded by Brownback that exempted 191,000 businesses from income taxes and dropped the top tax rate for individuals to 3.9 percent in 2018 from 6.45 percent in 2012. Legislators in other states, such as those in Missouri, have since included or are planning to include stop-gap measures to keep from needing to gut expected state services.
