Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith beat Democrat Mike Espy to become the first woman elected to represent Mississippi in the Senate.
Hyde-Smith, who got the nod during a special Senate election on Tuesday, will finish retired Sen. Thad Cochran’s current term through 2020. She was appointed to succeed him earlier this year.
With her win, Republicans have a a 53-seat majority in the Senate for the next two years.
