Republic, Brookline consolidation benefits all

Posted online
In Webster’s dictionary, the word consolidate means, “To unite into one system or whole; to join in a merger or union.”
To the village of Brookline and the city of Republic, the word consolidate means, “To create a community partnership strategically positioned for progress, allowing for development of a more self-sufficient community where people can live, work, play and go to school.”
For southwest Missouri, consolidation means high quality, managed growth for a very important part of
the region. Managing growth in a
way that benefits the entire area can only be accomplished by neighboring governments working together in
coordination with the business community.
The village of Brookline lies between the cities of Springfield and Republic, between Highway 60 and Interstate 44, with the James River Freeway extension transecting the community’s boundaries. It also is in close proximity to the transportation gateway to the new midfield terminal project at the Springfield-Branson Regional Airport.
In an effort to provide water and sanitary sewer to residents of their community, the village of Brookline sought assistance from a number of entities including the city of Republic. After several meetings and discussions, the
leaders of both communities determined a partnership would be best for both communities. Residents of both communities will make this determination on April 5.
It truly is a win-win-win. It is a win for the village of Brookline as they will receive water and sanitary sewer for the residents, landowners and future development. They also receive the benefit of excellent city staff for administration, planning and land use management. Also,
new city services will include street maintenance, police, emergency management, and parks and recreation services.
The city of Republic will receive additional commercial development opportunities, environmental protection from septic tanks and wells, and the ability to develop a more balanced economy with the creation of jobs and an expanded tax base.
Greene County, the region and landowners will benefit from well-managed growth and development – for the current residents, as well as future residents and businesses that will call the community home.
Both the village of Brookline and the city of Republic are members of the Ozarks Regional Economic Partnership, a regional economic development program serving southwest Missouri. The partnership promotes regional cooperation on issues that affect economic prosperity for the region. The consolidation plan of Brookline and Republic is one of the best examples of a true partnership to protect and enhance the economic prosperity of the area.
We are all working together for the same goal – to make the Ozarks a better place to live and work. This consolidation plan is in line with this goal. We hope the voters agree.
