U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, chairperson of the House Committee on Homeland Security, filed suit against former President Donald Trump.
Filed with plaintiff NAACP, Thompson alleges Trump conspired with his attorney Rudy Giuliani, the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers to incite the insurrection at the Capitol last month in an attempt to prevent legislators from certifying the presidential election results.
Thompson, D-Mississippi, filed the suit under a Reconstruction-era law called the Ku Klux Klan Act. It comes three days after Trump was acquitted in a Senate impeachment trial.
A Trump senior adviser said in a statement that Trump “did not incite or conspire to incite any violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6."
