Report: GM plans at least 4,000 layoffs

General Motors is planning to slash at least 4,000 jobs, people familiar with the matter told CNBC.

The layoffs are part of a restructuring announced in November, through which the company intends to halt production at five North American plants and cut 14,000 jobs.

The company is seeking to cut as many jobs as possible before reporting its quarterly earnings on Wednesday, the sources said.
