Bill Gates reportedly left the Microsoft board last year amid an investigation into a romantic relationship with a female employee at the company, sources familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal.
The sources said Gates resigned before the board's probe was completed.
A spokesperson for Gates said the affair that occurred nearly 20 years ago "ended amicably." His decision to exit the board was unrelated, the spokesperson said.
