Missouri Rep. Sara Lampe, D-Springfield, this morning said she would be running for the state's lieutenant governor position, which is up for vote this year.
Lampe visited Missouri State University's Plaster Student Union to make the announcement, according to a news release.
She is looking to take the position currently held by the state's 46th lieutenant governor, Republican Peter Kinder, who announced late last year he would seek a third term.
The lieutenant governor, who serves as the second-highest ranking officer of Missouri's executive branch, also is the state's official senior advocate.
Lampe previously worked at Drury University and at Springfield Public Schools. She serves on House committees for the state's budget, elementary and secondary education, utilities and downsizing state government, according to the House
Web site.
"These are difficult times for working families and seniors," Lampe said in the release. "My experience in public education, running a small business and balancing the state budget have uniquely prepared me to take on this this new challenge."
Lampe was elected in 2004 and now serves as Minority Caucus secretary. She holds the 138th District seat in the House.
Lampe has termed out of the House, and the 138th District, which used to encompasses central Springfield, now, due to redistricting, covers Stone, western Christian County and a western portion of Taney County, according to
Springfield Business Journal archives.
