Rep. Joe Crowley defeated in Democratic primary upset

Rep. Joe Crowley, D-New York, was defeated in the primaries yesterday by newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Ocasio-Cortez led by more than 3,600 votes over Crowley, the House Democratic Caucus chairman who was thought to be the next House speaker.

A Bernie Sanders supporter who has called for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Ocasio-Cortez, 28, has never held office before. She has gained the endorsement of MoveOn and the Democratic Socialists of America, among other groups.
