Regulators approve first new depression drug since 1980s

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration yesterday approved the first new depression medication since the 1980s.

Johnson & Johnson's new drug Spravato is the brand name for esketamine, a nasal spray designed to treat severe forms of depression.

It contains the chemical mirror image of ketamine, which is used for its psychedelic effects.
