Elizabeth Brooks, Owner of Springfield Riding Club, says when she started her business, she knew about horses and farming, but should have known more about how hay production affects her bottom line. “Hay is a commodity and so on a good year, everyone has it and the price drops. On a bad year, no one has it and the price goes up, and you have to find a way to not fluctuate the price to your customer to still offer a steady price to your customer, but manage that fluctuation on the back end,” says Brooks. If you can produce your own goods, you don’t have to purchase them at market price and pass the expense to your customers. Brooks is a Springfield Business Journal 2019 40 Under 40 honoree.
