A Red Racks store is coming to the former Southern Hills Shopping Center space that long housed the Missouri Job Center before its relocation last year.
Signage posted outside the 2900 E. Sunshine St. building in Southern Hills Shopping Center indicates a Red Racks store is "coming soon" and points to a "bigger space" and "more selection."
Red Racks currently operates a store across Sunshine Street in the former Ruby’s Market at 2843 E. Sunshine St. The organization's website also lists Springfield locations at 1711 N. Glenstone Ave. and 1707 W. Battlefield Road.
Red Racks Director of Business Operations Chandra Regan said via email that a late summer relocation date is targeted in the move that would increase the store's square footage to 41,000 from 16,000. A spokesperson with Disabled American Veterans’ national office said the store is managed by Red Racks to the benefit of DAV Department of Missouri.
Red Racks opened a store on the north side of Sunshine Street in 2019 in space that formerly was used by the Ruby’s Market concept from Price Cutter parent company Pyramid Foods. At the location in Southern Hills Shopping Center, south of Sunshine Street, the Missouri Job Center was a tenant for around 15 years before relocating in October 2024 to 1600 N. Campbell Ave.

It would be interesting for an enterprising reporter to look at the financial deal between what I believe is a for-profit enterprise and the DAV. If you ask a Red Racks employee to tell you the location of a DAV center, they look at you with a blank.stare. A few years ago I asked a DAV member why their Springfield chapter was conducting a garage sale when they had several resale stores. His answer: “All that money goes to Kansas City.”
