Red Onion-Garlic Steak Sauce

The rich, deep, robust flavors of this sauce are perfect with steaks, roast beef sandwiches, burgers and all kinds of meaty sandwiches.

Why try? This is a great use for those extra tomatoes you may have from your summer garden or the farmers market.

Foodie Byte: This sauce is great for adding a blast of flavor to turkey and chicken burgers that can otherwise be a bit bland at times.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 5 large red onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled, minced
  • 1 medium ripe tomato, finely diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon hot red pepper sauce, or to taste
  • 7 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 cup sherry wine vinegar

Preparation

1. In a large skillet heat butter over medium heat and add onions and brown sugar until well browned, about 30 minutes.
2. Stir in garlic, ginger and tomatoes and cook about 3 minutes.
3. Add hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and wine vinegar.
4. Reduce the heat to low and cook stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and season with salt and pepper.
5. Let cool to room temperature. This will keep covered and refrigerated for up to 1 month.
