Record 5% of Fortune 500 CEOs are female

It may not sound like a lot, but a record 5 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs on this year's list are female. The annual list, which was released on Monday, ranks the revenues of the largest U.S. companies.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra is the highest-ranked female on the list, followed by Meg Whitman, CEO of Hewlett-Packard, according to Fox Business.

Other women running companies ranked in the top 50 included Virginia Rometty of IBM, Patricia Woertz of Archer Daniels Midland and Indra Nooyi of Pepsico. A total of 25 women helm companies on the Fortune 500 list.

Topping the overall list was Wal-Mart Stores Inc. with $476 billion in annual revenue. Exxon Mobil came in second with $407 billion in revenue.
