When it comes to toys, the look but don’t touch theory eventually pays off.
Just ask NIGO, real name Tomoaki Nagao, the Japanese designer behind luxury clothing brands Billionaire Boys Club and A Bathing Ape, who brought in $505,202 for 600 of his "Star Wars" toys at a recent Sotheby's New York auction.
The top seller? CNN reports a pristine multipack of seven figurines from "The Empire Strikes Back," sold exclusively in the Sears supermarket chain in Canada, brought top dollar. Featuring Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian, it went for three times the estimate, a massive $32,500. Another of the big sellers was a glorified cardboard box. A 1977 store display from an 'Early Bird Certificate Package' went for $20,000. The reason: there are only five in existence.
The seventh installment in the series, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opened at midnight. The sci-fi movie is expected to shatter opening weekend box office records.
