Springfield-based nonprofit Rainbow Network received a donation of anti-parasitic medication valued at $346,900.
The shipment from Seattle-based World Concern and Imres Medical Solutions in the Netherlands comprises 300,000 doses of
Albendazole, a drug used to treat infections caused by worms, according to a news release.
Rainbow Network plans to distribute the medicine to some 42,000 people in rural Nicaragua, an area where the two largest health care problems are internal parasites and malnutrition, according to the the Christian-based ministry.
In April, Rainbow Network celebrated the milestone of 40 million meals served.
The nonprofit, which also provides microloans to support economic development in country, operates with a small paid staff near Campbell 16 theater with the help of around 1,700 volunteers.
With 2011 reported assets of $750,000, Rainbow Network is above a nonprofit asset threshold in Springfield: More than 70 percent of nonprofits have assets less than $500,000, according to
