The sale runs today 1-7 p.m. at the Springfield-Greene County Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave., and will feature two types of rain barrels. Pre-made barrels complete with accessories are available for $100, or $75 for Greene County residents, while rain barrel diverter kits are also $100, or $50 for county residents.
Rain barrels work by collecting water from a home or business’ downspout; the water can then be used to water landscaping, wash cars, clean tools or any other nonpotable water use.
JRBP says using rain barrels keeps storm water on-site, instead of allowing it to collect pollutants and funnel into storm drains that lead to lakes and rivers. The barrels also save energy since water doesn’t have to be pumped to the site.
The partnership estimates that for a home with a 1,000-square-foot roof, one inch of rain can collect 600 gallons of water.
