Representatives from the city of Springfield, the Federal Railroad Administration, Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railway and the Catalpa Crossing Capital Improvement Committee were on hand for the July 31 ribbon cutting at the new Catalpa Street Quiet Zone. The $160,000 project, funded by the 1/4-cent capital improvements sales tax and a donation from the CCCIC, is a segment of the rail line within which locomotive horns are not sounded at crossings equipped with the required supplemental safety measures.
