Public affairs leaders converge for MSU conference

Panelists at Missouri State University’s second annual Public Affairs Conference will tackle topics such as international economic development, agribusiness and the effect of gasoline prices on the costs of doing business.

The conference, themed Horizons of Citizenship, is April 19–21. It is free and open to the public.

Scheduled keynote speakers:

• Syd Lieberman, author and teacher, will present “The Summer of Treason: Philadelphia 1776” at noon Wednesday at the Plaster Student Union Theater;

• Sen. John Edwards, presidential hopeful in 2004, will present “Restoring the American Dream” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts;

• John H. Keiser, retired MSU president, will present “Horizons for the American Citizen” at noon Thursday at the PSU Theater;

• Sen. Sam Brownback, Kansas congressman, will present “The New American Exceptionalism” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the PSU Theater; and

• Sen. David Pryor, founding dean of the University of Arkansas's Clinton School of Public Service, will present “The Price of Citizenship” at noon Friday at the PSU Theatre.

National and local experts also will participate in 24 panel discussions. Topics include “The Development of Nations,” about America’s and Europe’s leadership in economic development; “The Explosion of Boomers,” about challenges society is facing as the baby boomers move into retirement; “It’s What’s for Dinner,” about agriculture as it is transformed into agribusiness; and “Fill’er Up: The Future of Energy,” about the price of gasoline and how it affects the economy and the costs of doing business.
